Labor Trafficking

Status:

ONGOING

Title of Resolution:

2014.3.R11: Labor Trafficking

WG-USA Resolves:

…to focus on the governance of local, national, and international corporations to improve the working conditions for women in the production of goods and services and ensure protection from labor trafficking, forced labor, unfair wages and poor working conditions.

Plan of Action:

  1. WG-USA will encourage members to engage in advocacy for National Supply Chain Transparencies Legislation that will promote the dignity of workers, sustainability and deter child and trafficking labor.

  2. WG-USA will promote legislation that will protect trafficking victims and promote more severe penalties on the local, state and national levels.

  3. WG-USA will encourage its members to research the sustainability practices and supply chain codes of conduct for companies that consumers support and the investment power of communities.

  4. WG-USA will encourage its members to purchase products through Fair Trade markets, especially those that do not employ slave labor.

  5. WG-USA will educate members and monitor changes that are being made in the rights of women globally.

Supporting Statement:

Our lives are greatly influenced by corporations who make our goods and perform our services, be they local, state, national or international.  Their governance rules affect rights of women who are engaged in mining, agriculture, fishing and other industries as well as goods they produce that reach consumers.

In remarks before the Tom Lantos’ Human Rights Commission, Luis CdeBaca, Ambassador-at-large, Officer to Monitor Trafficking stated, “…when you mentioned the ILO (International Labor Organization) report, 150- Billion reasons why we have to fight human trafficking, telling us that this is not just a moral issue, that is just not a security issue, this is also an economic issue. A hundred-and-fifty-billion dollars industry around the world.”

“The conclusion of the ILO report is undeniable and I’ll simply quote them-the continued existence of forced labor is bad for business, bad for development and bad for its victims.  It is a practice that has no place in modern society.”

Financial Implication for WG-USA:

At this time no cost is anticipated.
