Women and Girls’ Health: Global and Domestic

Women Graduates–USA is a nonprofit organization whose members are college and university graduates, graduate students, doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers.  As members of WG–USA, our members are also members of Graduate Women International; WG–USA is the US Affiliate of GWI. Our international perspective informs our advocacy for social and economic justice for all women and girls.

Women Graduates–USA supports equal access to health care throughout a women’s life – from birth, through active adult life and quality of life in later years.

WG–USA advocacy highlights myriad health needs of women and girls. WG–USA supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals and notes SDG #4 which addresses Women’s Health and Well-Being. The lack of gender-disaggregated health data perpetuates a lack of awareness, disguises the needs of different life stage of women, and impedes action at all levels of decision making.

Climate change has been declared the single largest health threat facing humanity and shows women to be disproportionality harmed. Of note is increasing air pollution, deteriorating water quality, and rapidly spreading disease due to unaffordable or unavailable health care. The increase of extreme weather events impacts food security, forces displacement and migration of people, and increases physical and mental health challenges for girls, women and their families.

Where do we start?  WG–USA acts on the passions and expertise of its members. At the 2022 WG–USA Annual General Meeting, members strengthened WG–USA’s commitment to the protection of women’s rights to access healthcare at all stages of life with a resolution and an advocacy plan.

Resolution 2022 Global Women’s Health Resolution to promote global women’s health and universal health, the cornerstone for women’s education, sustainable economic development, and societal prosperity. RESOLVED: "To recognize and protect women’s basic right to access to health care, particularly at critical life stages of puberty, reproductive, menopause and eldercare."

WG–USA will advocate at the state and national level to protect women’s human rights for access to health care at all critical life stages including reproductive and child mortality and well-being.
