Getting to Know Mexico

In order to prepare our WG-USA for their trip to Mexico in August 2010, we will post items of interest about the country itself -- travel, books, culture, and other topics.

Please visit often as we post more information.

Links about Mexico will appear in the left sidebar.

Flag of MexicoThe Flag of Mexico (Spanish: Bandera de México) is a vertical Tricolour of green, white, and red with the national coat of arms charged in the center of the white stripe. While the meaning of the colors has changed over time, these three colors were adopted by Mexico following independence from Spain during the country's War of Independence. The current flag was adopted in 1968, but the overall design has been used since 1821, when the First National Flag was created. The current law of national symbols, Law on the National Arms, Flag, and Anthem, that governs the use of the national flag has been in place since 1984.

Seal of Mexico CityMexico City (Spanish: Ciudad de México, or México) is the capital city of Mexico. Mexico City is located in the Valley of Mexico, also called the Valley of Anáhuac, a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,349 ft). The city was originally built as Tenochtitlan by the Aztecs in 1325 on an island of Lake Texcoco. It was almost completely destroyed in the siege of 1521, and was subsequently redesigned and rebuilt in accordance with the Spanish urban standards. In 1524 the municipality of Mexico City was established, known as México Tenustitlán, and as of 1585 it was officially known as ciudad de México.
